The bold thesis of this address: In navigating the long journey of the development of Christian higher education institutions into universities, two realities are inescapable: First, any Christian higher education institution must have a symbiotic relationship with its Christian constituency, whether that be a church, or a denomination (Catholic, Anglican, Presbyterian, Australian Christian Churches). Second, it must satisfy the requirements of the State for academic standards and social and cultural utility. From these two essential realities, two corollaries follow, the first sobering, the second encouraging. If you do not observe and satisfy these twin realities, you will fail: your doom is writ. But if you do observe them, success is inevitable.

What Makes Pentecostal Higher Education pentecostal?

This article will first explore some of the common themes identified in the current literature exploring Pentecostal Higher Education. The themes studied include: the formation of students; the importance of faith-filled faculty; and, a curriculum that seeks truth as led by the Spirit of truth. Yet, as these values are not distinctly Pentecostal a model is proposed based on the five-fold gospel to provide the framework for a unique approach to Pentecostal education. Secondly, this schema of the five-fold gospel is explored. Each tenet is described and applied as an educational priority for Pentecostal Higher Education. In this way, the values and spirituality of Pentecostalism are deliberately infused into the Higher Education institution.

This paper proposes that Pentecostal Christian higher education has a strategic opportunity to contribute to the restoration and stewardship of religious history in Australia. Twentieth century historical shifts, especially the rise of social history, the expansion of religious history beyond the church, and the interpretive challenges presented by postmodernism have broadened the discipline’s methodological possibilities while also complicating older confidence about truth and providential explanations of causality. Additionally, in increasingly secular and theologically illiterate contexts, these developments risk rendering the Christian past as unintelligible or reducible to non-theological categories. These complexities are relevant for Pentecostals, whose emphasis on experience and renewal can tend toward presentism and a superficial historical self-understanding. Drawing on historiography and examples from Australian scholarship, this paper contends that Pentecostal Christian higher education institutions can hold together rigorous historical method and theological literacy, forming graduates capable of truthful historiography, disciplined interpretation, and meaningful public engagement. History, it is argued, is not ancillary to Pentecostal Christian higher education, but a formative interdisciplinary practice which shapes Pentecostal identity, mission and institutional stewardship.

This article seeks only to begin an exploration of the ways in which the רוח or Spirit^[1] (dis)ables Ezekiel as prophetic witness. This is proposed to be directly tied to the preferential naming of Ezekiel as בן־אדם (“son of man”) throughout the book of Ezekiel. Scholars have long contended that this name refers to the human-ness of Ezekiel, but this article proposes to fill a lacuna regarding the rhetorical function of this name as it ties in directly to Ezekiel’s experiences of the Spirit of Yahweh as prophetic witness to and for and as Israel.
